Your child will make the fastest progress if they do some work at home as well as in school. As your child starts school you could help them to:


Hold a pencil properly
Write their name
Write names of friends and family
Learn to read and write some letters of the alphabet, saying the name and the sound the letter makes
Read and write numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Count to 10 or more objects (e.g. count their toys)
Learn the shapes– circle, triangle, rectangle and square
Sing rhymes and songs
Tie laces!

Reading bags and book swaps
You can buy a book bag from the office for £2.50. Please bring the bag and choose a new book every day. It is important for your child to get into the habit. We may decide to send a reading book that your child has been using with the teacher. It usually has a pink or red sticker on it.

Learning letters and words
It is important to make learning fun! Your child will be given words and letters to learn. Some ways to help your child learn them are
Finding the letters or words in a magazine, book, comic or newspaper
Writing them down each day in different colour pens
Putting them on small pieces of paper and playing word and letter games with them.
Your child will be sent home with a reading pack that has a whiteboard and pen and a key word game in it and a list of all the words your child will be learning over the first two years in school. Some children learn these quicker than others but if you are worried about their progress or want more ideas please talk to us.
